how to get grass stains out of nike shoes

Oh No! You just walked outside wearing your brand new Nikes only to realize moments later that your once white shoes are now covered in grass stains.

What should you do? Will these stains come out?

First, don’t worry, the stains will come out. It just might take a little patience and some elbow grease, but they will come out. In fact, it might be easier than you think.

In this post, we are going to talk about how to get grass stains out of Nike shoes to make your kicks look new again.

You might be surprised that most of the products that we recommend in this article are probably in your house right now.

How to get grass stains out of Nike shoes

Method #1

What you will need

  • A shoe brush or damp cloth
  • A toothbrush – Soft bristle is preferred
  • Clear liquid dish soap
  • A tablespoon of White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Water

6 Easy Steps To Make Your Nikes Look New Again

  1. The first step, is to use the shoe brush to remove any loose dirt off your shoes. You can also take a damp cloth that you dipped in warm water and wipe away any surface stains. This will help to remove some of the superficial marks and help you see what areas need special attention.
  2. Next, mix water and baking soda together to create a paste.
  3. Apply this paste directly to the grass stain with the help of a toothbrush. For more difficult grass stains, apply the paste very liberally and take the time to really work it into the stain with the toothbrush.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix half a cup of warm water, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a drop of clear dish soap.
  5. We are now going to apply this solution to the affected area. The best way to do this is by using the same toothbrush that you used for the baking soda mix.
  6. Lastly, rinse the area with water and allow it to dry.

See just how easy this can be done in the following video:

Method #2

This next method uses what almost everyone has in their house, toothpaste. Why use toothpaste? We aren’t talking about just any kind of toothpaste. We are talking about toothpaste with baking soda.

Baking soda does a great job of cleaning our teeth white and it can do the same for your Nikes. So let’s see how this can be done.

What you will need:

  • A shoe brush or a damp cloth
  • Baking soda toothpaste (Note: It is important to choose a non-gel baking soda toothpaste, as colored toothpaste can do more harm than good. My favorite toothpaste for this would be Arm & Hammer’s Advance Whitening or something similar)
  • A toothbrush – Soft bristle is preferred
  • Warm Water

No More Grass Stains In 4 Easy Steps

  1. With the help of a shoe brush or a damp cloth wipe away any loose dirt or superficial stains on your shoe.
  2. Next, apply a couple dabs of baking soda toothpaste to the affected area.
  3. Work in the toothpaste with the help of a toothbrush.
  4. Rise with warm water and allow to dry.

Method #3

This next method uses a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it works really especially with white shoes.

I like this method for more delicate materials such as leather as you won’t be using bristles from a toothbrush. However, with that being said, be careful not to brush too hard or else you risk taking the color off.

What you will need:

  • A small bowl of warm water
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
  • A small amount of clear liquid dish soap

Grass Stains Be Gone In 4 Steps

  1. Activate your Mr. Clean Eraser by dipping it into warm water.
  2. Next, softly scrub the eraser over the affected area (preferably the hard sole areas). Be careful not to scrub too hard. If you are having a hard time removing the stain use more water.
  3. Lastly, mix a little dish soap and some water together in a separate bowl. Apply this mixture with a cloth or brush, to clean the rest of the shoe.
  4. Rinse and store in a safe location where they can air dry.

It is just that easy!

Method # 4

So far we have talked about methods for removing grass stains with products that can be found around your home. This next one uses a different approach. We will be using a product called Krud Kutter.

You probably recognize this name as it is used around the kitchen quite often. However, they have come out with Krud Kutter Sport Stain Remover specifically designed for getting out those tough stains such as grass stains. Let’s see how this works

What you will need:

  • Krud Kutter Sport Stain Remover
  • Laundry Detergent

As Easy As Doing Laundry….

  1. Spray the affected area with Krud Kutter Stain remover and allow it to soak. Depending on the stain you can work in the product with a brush, cloth or even a toothbrush. You can also pre-treat your shoes and let them soak overnight.
  2. Next, load your shoes into the washing machine, put in just a little bit of laundry detergent and allow the machine to do its magic.
  3. Remove your Nikes from the washer and allow to air dry.

Additional Tips…

Always test the product first. In this post, we have talked about using a variety of different products to get grass stains out of your Nikes. However, it is nearly impossible to talk about every kind of Nike shoe out there. With that in mind, always test a small portion of your shoe first, to make sure that it won’t leave marks or discolor your shoe.

Once you learn that it won’t adversely affect your shoe, you can continue to use that product on the rest of your shoe.

Final Thoughts…

Let’s admit it, grass stains are a pain. However, one of the best ways to keep grass stains at bay is good prevention. The first thing you can do once you take your new kicks out of the box is to spray them down with a stain protectant.

One such product that I would recommend is called Kiwi Protect All. It is easy to use a product that will protect your Nikes from those tough grass stains.

Learn more about how to apply Kiwi Protect All in a previous post found here.
